This week we have talked about the ways in which the internet can be used in both positive and negative ways. We took a look at an Ottawa area group called Small Gestures Change Lives (SGCL) who decided to do just that. They decided on a few small gestures that could make a huge difference a difference in someone elses life. Here are a few of the videos that we looked at.

Today, we took what we learned and created individual pledges on how to be a "Responsible Digital Citizen." We can't wait to share them with you!
Have a safe and wonderful weekend! :)

Samaritans on the Digital Road
As I'm sure you read in the newsletter that was sent home last week, we will be covering "Samaritans on a Digital Road" throughout the week. Each lesson ties the Religion Curriculum to the
responsible use of technology, helping students become discerning digital
(online) citizens. We watched two videos in class today that sparked a lot of very interesting, and thoughtful talk. Ask your child to summarize the videos to you and then watch them together to see how one little act of kindness can go a long way!

Realistic Fiction
Over the last week, our class has been taking a look at the characteristics of a Realistic Fiction in preparation for writing their own. They should be able to tell you what these characteristics are! It makes for a great dinner conversation. Today, we worked in groups to look for the story elements found in a particular text and presented them to the class. Take a look at our combined answers!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families. It is so important to take the time out of our busy lives to stop and think about what we are thankful for.
Today in math, we inquired about different ways to represent 100 thousand. Many ways were explored.

We then created a mini book to illustrate the many different ways to represent numbers (e.g., standard form, expanded form, place value chart).
Take a look at this quiz and see how you do!

Tickled Pink and Green to Grow
What is a level 1, 2, 3, 4? That is what we discussed today! We looked at exemplars of a "summary" activity we completed last week and discussed ways to improve our answers to move up a level. In groups, we gave feedback on how to improve an answer using Tickled Pink and Green to Grow". Tickled Pink represents what was done well and Green to Grow represents what we can do to improve next time. We will continue to use this strategy throughout the year!

Homework
There seems to be a glitch with the website and it's not allowing me to update the Homework section so I'll post it here until it's figured out!
Math test Friday
Math Chapter Review due tomorrow
Spelling due Friday
Math Equal Expressions due tomorrow
What a beautiful start to the morning!
Today we had a beautiful liturgy in the gym and the kids at McMaster did a fantastic job at using their wonderful singing voices. For some reason, I get shivers every time I hear our school sing together.
This month, we have been focusing on "Hospitality" and what it means. Each class decorated a letter to the word WELCOME to put up in our gym or front entrance to help make McMaster a welcoming place to be.
In math, we talked about variables and how they can be represented by a letter or symbol. They got together in groups to discuss a problem I had posted on the Smart Board. Here's a glimpse at what they came up with and the different strategies they used.

They did a super job and showed wonderful sportsmanship all day!
In Religion, we have been talking about how we can help make the world a better place. We started off by watching a few videos to help inspire some ideas. Take a look at this one!

Welcome!
Welcome to our Gr. 5/6 Blog that will hopefully keep you connected with what is going on in our classroom and school.
Today we worked on our Math Interactive Journals. We completed the "Rules Page" on the right, so we moved on to the left hand side of the page. I asked them to apply what they learned into something creative like a cartoon, poster or poem. They seemed to enjoy adding some creativity into our math lesson! Here are some examples of their work.
